I wasn’t expecting the loudest gig of the year to be Perfume Genius, to be quite honest. But - and to great effect - this is at times bone-rattingly loud, crunched distortion to beat straight into your soul. Michael Hadreas, with a permanently etched expression of worry on his face, makes the most of sinking, stretching, and dancing with the mic stand and a single chair on stage as he tries to break everyone’s heart. Slip Away is gorgeous, and Eye In The Wall is a triumph. Three covers in a 17 song set (including Fade Into You) is maybe a bit much, but it’s entrancing company. Support from Hand Habits, whom I mostly know from their collaboration with Matt Berninger on this year’s Get Sunk, and whose voice resembles that of Owen Evans in some sense. They’re pulling double duty as Hadreas’ backing band, and are good fun in both sets, with an acknowledgement of their burgeoning birdwatching lesbian fanbase.
