Having “seen” the acoustic in-store at Rough Trade, it’s nice to be having the full-band electric Divine Comedy experience. In tonight’s case, though, “full-band” and “electric” are both doing some heavy lifting, with some technical problems throughout the show with both the piano and Neil Hannon’s amp. The result, though, is a bonus rendition of My Lovely Horse, so it’s all good fun, and Hannon is a consummate professional who patches over it. The new stuff slots in nicely with the old stuff, it’s a treat to hear Bang Goes The Knighthood, and even though I’ve never really got into the older classics, the run of Something For The Weekend, Becoming More Like Alfie, Absent Friends, and National Express at the end of the main set is properly fun. Everyone is buoyed by it being the end of the tour, not least me because they’re giving away surplus VIP merch packages, so thank you very much. Support from Studio Electrophonique was maybe the best support-headliner alignment I’ve seen this year, like an 80s British indie Beach House.
