Interesting to note that, unlike a lot of touring acts who are off around the country in the autumn after doing a couple of weeks here at the Fringe, Phil Wang’s show isn’t explicitly labelled as WIP. I don’t care to get into the vagaries of what that does or doesn’t mean, but it’s interesting to see this presented as the final product. I’m not sure how much this is cohering at the moment, but maybe that’s the effect of a tour show being condensed down to 60 minutes. Wang is naturally funny, and a lot of individual routines like a dodgy David Bowie song and the two dimensions of a bike are good stuff. It just feels very grab-baggy at the moment. An enjoyable way to spend an hour in the afternoon, but I don’t think I’d be thrilled with it as a tour show.
