Morgan Rees - Turning Thirsty (+Jayde Adams)

Bristol Old Vic, 2024-05-03

  1. I love the combination of having loads of comedians for friends and having no designs on being a professional comedian in the slightest. It means that when my friends go on to have incredible successes, there is no trace of jealousy, merely genuine delight in them doing well.

  2. So it is here with Morgan, who’s made it to the point where he’s on his debut tour and is playing the Old Vic. The actual Old Vic - not the studio or anything, but the actual, proper, main room. Absolutely fair play to the lad, he’s earned it. He is so good at this, and he works so hard for it too. Utterly deserved.

  3. Turning Thirsty is very much the kind of show Morgan’s always wanted to do - 60 minutes of jokes, not the Edinburgh classic. A decent bit of crowdwork at the top, a lot of routines I’ve seen him work out over the last while. The sex toy routine is, pound for pound, one of the funniest things I’ve seen on stage, and the fact this isn’t even his big closer is insane.

  4. The composition of the room is weird - not least the gaggle of women who seem like they’ve been on a bottomless brunch that’s turned into a bottomless lunch, dinner, and now theatre. At one point Alasdair breaks and tells them to shut up, and they start very childishly swearing at him. Wild.

  5. Jayde Adams is, bizarrely, opening for Morgan, doing a favour in return for him supporting her on tour. This is very much a persona set over a material set, and I dunno, I kind of expected better? Her persona is certainly strong, but it can’t cover that many sins.
