We’re back! Another Ozu film! This time, a colour one, and one I learn later was even a remake of an older Ozu film!
It’s also - not that Tokyo wasn’t - much funnier. I mean, even just on a base level. The most tender film to be full of fart jokes and kids shitting themselves I’ve ever seen.
It’s understandable that this came from Ozu, a clear preoccupation with the intergenerational divide. This time, the kids are going on a silent protest until their parents get them a TV set (oh it was 1959, come on).
All the adults in the film seem to find this alternately frustrating and charming, although leaning much more towards the former. Mostly dependent on how related they are to the kids.
The kids, though, are utterly adorable. The genuinely sweet and innocent way the youngest repeatedly goes “I love you!” is wonderful.
