The only compelling thing to say for the Exit 8 novelisation is that it’s only 88 pages long. Mind-bogglingly badly written - if I had sat down and deliberately tried to write something this shamelessly lacking in subtext, I don’t think I could have managed it. Not so Genki Karamura, offering us such gems as “All of that only deepend my sense that I wasn’t fit to be a parent. And now, all of a sudden, as I was being asked to make that choice, I found myself lost in a literal maze of confusion.” Anything depicted on screen is exposited to great and unnecessary fidelity, and any interior motivation is painfully spelled out. An absolute disservice to the film.
